Happy New Year, sweet friends!
I have never before made “real” New Year’s resolutions because I’ve always been in school and the “new year,” for me, thus began in August.
However, This January starts my final year in college and I’ve found myself looking forward to the actual New Year, not simply the fresh start of a new semester.
Admittedly, I have a pretty long list of resolutions for myself regarding 2015 and all the beautiful opportunities I am sure it holds. However, as I was making all of these goals for myself, God brought to me a few verses about my life and His involvement in it.
“I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course.” Jeremiah 10:23
“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Proverbs 16:9
God has a plan for me, you, and everyone else in the world, and we can rest easy knowing that as long as we walk in His will, only the best is in store for us. We can plan for our lives and make goals. In fact, God wants us to be ambitious and desire the best for ourselves. He values hard work and expects us to plan for a good future. He simply wants to remind us that, because we cannot see everything from beginning to end (as He does), we have to trust that His plans are greater, higher, wiser, and better for us than even our greatest desires. We can strive for what we see as best, but He will continually surprise us with something even better than that.
“Earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way.” 1 Corinthians 12:31
The greatest resolutions we can make, as children of God, cannot be found on a list of every little thing we hope to see in the year to come. It is to continually seek the will of the Lord and to look readily for the stepping stones He is laying in front of us.
“Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
This year, I pray that you will be abundantly blessed with a heightened sense of God’s presence and work of the Holy Spirit in your life. May you seek His wisdom every morning, and go to bed at night with the understanding that the Sovereign of the universe is working on your behalf. He promises to crown your efforts with success and lead you along the right paths. I pray that through every trial you will feel God’s love all the stronger, understand every blessing as a gift from God, and allow the love of Jesus to shine through your heart to reach and bless everyone you meet. You are loved, you are accepted, and you have a wonderful plan waiting for you ahead.
Happy New Year!
